Things to Do
Places worth a visit.
A short, honest list from people who actually walk it. Use this as a starting point — when you're here, ask and we'll tell you what's in season.
- Pub Half a mile
The Royal Oak Inn
Our local pub — a famous 800-year-old inn that sits on Meavy’s village green, just a short walk down the lane. You’ll get a warm welcome, a proper pint and hearty local food. A short stroll home across the fields after dinner.
- Village Half a mile
Meavy Village
The village itself — a picture-postcard green with a 12th-century church, the Royal Oak, and an ancient oak tree that has its own preservation order. Parts of the BBC’s filming of War Horse took place nearby.
- Walking On the farm
Callisham Woods
Step out of the front door, through the fields, and into our own quiet woodland. Early-morning strolls here — dew on the bracken, the brook murmuring, perhaps a buzzard overhead — are one of the best ways to start the day after breakfast.
- Walking About 2 miles
Burrator Reservoir
A beautiful open-water reservoir ringed by waymarked walks, with views out across the tors of south-west Dartmoor. Easy going on the lanes around it, or steeper paths up onto Sheepstor if you want to stretch your legs.
- Cycling Passes nearby
Drake's Trail
A traffic-free network of walking and cycling trails running through West Devon, linking Plymouth to Tavistock along disused railway lines and quiet lanes. A brilliant day out on two wheels, and you can start right from the farm gate.
- Views Around 3 miles
Sheepstor & the War Horse locations
Several of the Dartmoor scenes in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse were filmed on the moors near Meavy and Sheepstor. Bring walking boots and a sense of drama — the views across to the open moor are the film’s star in their own right.
- Town / culture 7 miles
Tavistock
A handsome old stannary town with an excellent Pannier Market (Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the pick), independent shops, the Bedford Hotel, and an unhurried pace that suits a rainy afternoon.
- Town / culture 12 miles
Plymouth & the Hoe
Ocean city and sea-port — home to the Hoe, the Royal William Yard, the Barbican’s narrow streets, and the Mayflower Steps. Railway station, National Express coaches and the ferries to France and Spain all depart from here.
On a walking holiday?
We're at the edge of the open moor, with the Two Moors Way, Drake's Trail and dozens of waymarked paths starting within a mile or two. We can dry wet boots and jackets, and make up a flask before you set off.
