Introduction
Callisham Farm is in the small village of Meavy in Dartmoor National Park, 10 miles from Plymouth. The guest house offers two en-suite double bedrooms plus an additional family room en-suite shower room. We are a minute's walk from Meavy village, which has a church, a Church of England primary school, a pub (the Royal Oak Inn) and a village green.
Pre-arrival
- We're located outside the village of Meavy, just off the main route from Yelverton to Ivybridge.

- The nearest shops are about 1 mile away in Yelverton.
- The nearest bus stop is in Meavy village, outside the village hall — an 8-minute walk from the farm. The next nearest stop is at Meavy Primary School, which has a small shelter. Buses from here connect through Yelverton to Plymouth, Tavistock and Exeter.
- Plymouth railway station is 12 miles away; the nearest branch station is Yelverton.
- Taxis are usually available from Yelverton but are best booked in advance. We can arrange this for you.
- We can accommodate pets for a small charge, subject to prior agreement.
Car parking & arrival
- Ample car parking on a tarmac surface with a slight incline down to the entrance.
- Access to the property is through a small garden gate, well lit at night.
- Entry step: 36 inches (91cm) deep and 5 inches (13cm) high. This leads to the porch area and a 34-inch (86cm) door into the hallway.
Welcome area
- Guests are welcomed in the hallway, which is level throughout.
- The hallway is well lit with overhead lighting.
- Assistance with luggage is available.
Bedrooms
- Guest rooms are accessed via a staircase of 12 steps, with a handrail on one side.
- Bedroom 1 has a single 8-inch step at the doorway. The other two rooms are on the level.
- Beds are normally made up with duvets. Standard pillows are feather and hollow-fibre.
- Every room has seating, bedside tables, bedside lamps, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers or dressing table.
- Flat-screen Freeview digital TV is provided in every room.
- Bedroom 1 (family / en-suite): one double bed at 30 inches (76cm) high with access from both sides. En-suite bathroom directly adjacent.
- Bedroom 2: standard double bed at 26 inches (66cm) high plus a single bed at 24 inches (61cm) high. The double has access from both sides; the single is accessible from one side only.
- Bedroom 3: standard double bed at 26 inches (66cm) high with access from both sides.
Bathrooms, shower rooms & toilets
- The en-suite in bedroom 1 is reached via a 29-inch (74cm) step-free, level-entry doorway from the bedroom. The toilet sits at 15 inches (38cm). The shower cubicle is entered via a 25-inch (64cm) doorway with a 10-inch (25cm) step, and has a removable shower head.
- The bathroom for bedroom 3 is reached via a step-free, level-entry doorway from the bedroom. The toilet is 15 inches (38cm) high. The shower cubicle is entered via a 29-inch (74cm) doorway with an 11-inch (28cm) step, also with a removable shower head.
Public areas — halls, stairs, landings, corridors
- All public areas are well lit using a combination of ceiling and table lamps.
- The hallway has slate flooring with one runner-type carpet with a non-slip backing.
- There are no steps to the guest breakfast room, which is on the ground floor along a corridor from the main entrance.
- A flight of 12 carpeted steps (each 8 inches / 20cm high) leads up to the guest bedrooms.
- The house is fully centrally heated.
- Automatic audible smoke alarms are fitted throughout the bedrooms and public areas.
- The landing on the first floor is carpeted and has low doorways into bedrooms 1 and 3 — 26 inches (66cm) wide, 63 inches (160cm) high, with a 2-inch (5cm) step down.
The dining room
- The breakfast / dining room is off the hallway on the ground floor. The entrance is 30 inches (76cm) wide and step-free / level-entry.
- Flooring is traditional slate with a rug (non-slip backing).
- Large windows give plenty of natural light, supplemented by adjustable overhead lights.
- A woodburner supplements the central heating in winter.
- Seating for six at a solid table with co-ordinating chairs, plus armchair / settee seating for four.
The garden
- Being a farm, there is plenty of outdoor space. The garden has uneven and stepped access in places.
- Guests are welcome to use the outside garden. There is a designated smoking area outdoors; smoking is not permitted inside the property.
Additional information
- "In case of fire" instructions are posted on the back of each guest-room door.
- Each bedroom has an information folder with local maps.
- We keep a selection of menus from local restaurants and pubs for guests to browse.
- Storage and drying facilities are available for walkers, cyclists and golfers.
- Free Wi-Fi is available on request.
- We're happy to cater for special diets, likes or dislikes — please let us know in advance.
- We can refrigerate prescription medicines and store perishable foods for a limited period.
- Mobile phone reception is limited and can be weak; it depends on your provider. Vodafone tends to be best.
